Sicily Ferry Routes

Looking for more information on Sicily ferry routes? Great!

In addition to the ports of Villa San Giovanni and Reggio di Calabria in Calabria (read about them here), ferries for Sicily leave from many other destinations too.

Naples to Palermo / Naples to Catania

A company called SNAV operates car-carrying ferries that take you southward across the Tyrrhenian Sea from Naples to Palermo in 11 hours. (SNAV has discontinued those high-speed hydrofoils that used to make the journey in 5 hours. What a pity!)

This ferry departs daily at 20:00 P.M. from Naples and arrives in Palermo at 06:30 A. M.

From August 11th-31st, there are two extra departures per day, one leaving Naples at 09:00 A.M. and arriving in Palermo at 19:00 P.M., and another leaves Naples at 21:00 P.M. and arrives in Palermo at 07:30 A.M. (timetables and fares).

TTT Lines operates one daily car-carrying Sicily ferry from Naples to Catania. The journey takes 12 hours and the ferry departs from Naples at 21:00 P.M. from Mondays to Saturdays and at 19:30 P.M. on Sundays. (timetables and fares)

Genoa to Palermo

If you are headed down to Sicily from the north of Italy, you may take a Sicily ferry from Genoa to Palermo operated by Grandi Navi Veloci (I love the name, it means Big Fast Ships).

They opeate a daily service on this route all year round and the journey takes 20 hours.

The good thing is you get pampered on such a long journey....cocktails, appetizers, boutiques, a cinema, a discotheque, and during the summer months, even a swimming pool! Provided the weather is good, of course.

Not every ferry has all these services on board, so check what facilities are available before you book your ticket.

You could turn this journey into a mini-cruise on the Tyrrhenian! (timetables and fares)

   Civitavecchia (Near Rome) to Palermo

This Sicily ferry connection is ideal if you plan to travel to Sicily after a trip to Rome. Grandi Navi Veloci operates a service on this route three times a week. (Mon, Wed, and Fri) all year round and the journey takes 12 hours.

Again, don't forget to check what facilities are on board before you book. (timetables and fares)

  Livorno to Palermo

This Sicily ferry connection is awesome if your plan is to visit Florence and Pisa before making your way south to Sicily.

Grandi Navi Veloci operates a service on this route three times a week (Sat, Tue, Thurs) all year round and the journey takes 12 hours. (timetables and fares)

     Malta to Pozzallo and Catania

If you're planning on getting to Sicily from Malta, you can take one of the ferries that are operated by Virtu Ferries.

In the summer months, two ferries leave the port of Valletta in Malta for Pozzallo in the south of Sicily twice a day except on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Additionally, there is also one Sicily ferry that departs Valletta for Catania except on Mondays and Thursdays. On certain days, the company offers coach transfers from Pozzallo to Catania instead of a direct ferry route. (timetables and fares)

        Cagliari (Sardinia) to Palermo

Tirrenia operates weekly ferries that will take you from Cagliari to Palermo every Friday, leaving Cagliari at 19:00 P.M. and arriving in Palermo at 08:30 A.M. The journey across the Tyrrhenian Sea takes 13.5 hours.

If you plan on booking tickets for the summer, do so as early as possible because the seats fill up with amazing speed! (timetables and fares)

I almost missed my impeccably-planned vacation to Sardinia once because I waited too long to buy my tickets. Phew!
